The “Network Against Violence”, an association of various women’s organisations in Amed (Diyarbakir), presented a report on violence against women at a press conference at the Human Rights Association (IHD).
As lawyer Öykü Çakmak explained, between 1 July and 10 December 2019, 838 women affected by male violence applied to the network. There were 720 cases of psychological violence and 422 cases of physical violence. Economic violence affected 392 women, digital violence and stalking 321, social violence 198.
Most of the perpetrators, according to the network’s observations, are the husbands of the women affected. All women have experienced more than one form of violence. At 85 percent, systematic psychological violence, which takes place both within families and in social structures, accounts for the largest share.
The network has also received cases of sexual violence beyond direct support requests. According to this, 97 cases of sexual abuse of girls between the ages of 15 and 18 have become known. Some of these cases involve the marriage of minors.
According to Öykü Çakmak, three women have been murdered by men in the past five months. In this connection, the lawyer also referred to the high suicide rate of women in Amed, which -she said- must be investigated legally and sociologically.
