Minister of Justice: Four times increase in prison population since 2000

Figures released by Minister of Justice Ergin, the number of convicts and detainees in Turkish prisons as of April 2, 2012 have increased four times since 2000. There were 24.855 convicts and 24.657 detainees in 2000, however now there are 95.652 convicts and 36.408 detainees.

Following a visit to prisons in Kurdish cities last month, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) directed severe criticism at the Turkish government for not providing any kind of medical assistance for sick prisoners.

Women prisoners denounce ill treatment in Sakran Prison

Arbitrary procedures involving maltreatment continue to be carried out in Sakran prison which made the news with woman prisoners being dragged by hair during their transfer. It has been reported that woman prisoners are forced to clean rooms full of construction rubbish.

IHD: annual report about human rights violation in Sirnak and Mardin

The Human Rights Association (IHD) Mardin branch has released its annual report about human rights violation for the cities of Mardin and Þirnak. The report states that 3,076 rights violations, including 39 killings carried out by the police and gendarmerie, have taken place in the two cities.

While the court cases of genocides, slaughters and human rights abuses went on for more than 15 years without any results, people charged with “having connections with a terrorist organization” are detained and sent to prison within the same day.

The Kurdish Center for Human Rights was established in Geneva in 2000, according to the Suisse civil law. In response to the genocide, war crimes and human rights violations occurring across the Kurdish regions of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria.

The KCHR, as a non-profit organization of social utility, was born from the need to  inform the European and Swiss people and the OHCHR on human rights violations against the Kurds via seminars and other dialogue platforms and to attend their meetings; to establish a dialogue with NGO’s, civil movements, associations, government and civil institutions..
